The UK government published "Introducing the AI Biosecurity Lab" on 24 October 2026. It says the government is establishing the AI Biosecurity Lab (AIBL) as part of a National AI Biosecurity Initiative, and describes it as the world's first dedicated AI biosecurity organisation, backed by £100 million of government funding.

The page says AIBL will launch with up to £200 million committed from two frontier AI companies: OpenAI will provide £100 million in compute and model credits and trusted access to its most capable relevant models through the Rosalind Biodefense programme, and Anthropic will provide up to £100 million in model credits, trusted model access and dedicated technical support.

It says Google DeepMind and Basecamp Research will partner with the lab on research collaborations.

The page says AIBL will operate as an independent, non-profit organisation, with a scientific advisory committee whose details will be set out in due course. It says initial delivery will focus on early detection of emerging biological threats and on accelerating vaccines, treatments and other medical countermeasures.
