What is SynthID?

SynthID is a watermarking tool made by Google DeepMind. It adds a mark that people cannot see or hear to AI-generated images, video, audio and text, so the content can later be identified as AI-made or altered. Google uses it in products including Gemini, where an image, video or audio clip can be uploaded to check for it.

Google DeepMind says the watermark on images and video is built to survive cropping, filters and compression, and the audio watermark to survive noise and changes of speed. For text, the watermark is added by adjusting the probability scores of the words a model picks.

People can check an image, video or audio clip by uploading it to Gemini. Google DeepMind is testing a SynthID Detector portal with journalists and media professionals, and others can join an early tester waitlist.
