OpenAI says it is launching a Grid Protectors Program under which its future compute campuses would cut their electricity use when the grid is under strain. The programme is described in an OpenAI post dated 2 November 2026; it is a stated ambition, and OpenAI says it will share further commitments as they are finalised.

The one concrete arrangement is for its planned campus in Effingham County, Georgia.

OpenAI says its agreement with Georgia Power includes up to 1,000 megawatts of flexible demand response, which it equates to the average electricity demand of roughly 700,000 households, and that the campus is still in development and is meant to serve as the programme's pilot.

OpenAI says it has committed to pay the full infrastructure and electric-service costs required to serve the Effingham campus.
