What happened

On 6 October 2026 the UK government confirmed it will accept all 44 recommendations of the National Commission into the Regulation of AI in Healthcare, published on 10 September. This is a government decision to act on recommendations; it does not itself change a rule.

The MHRA, the UK medicines regulator, is committed to issue draft guidance by December 2026 on managing changes to AI-enabled medical devices. A full implementation roadmap will be published by Spring 2027.

The MHRA also opened applications for the third phase of AI Airlock, its regulatory sandbox for AI-enabled medical devices, with the first innovators selected in November 2026.

What it means for you

Our view

This is a government decision to act on recommendations, not a change to any rule in force. What exists so far are two dated commitments, MHRA draft guidance by December 2026 and a roadmap with timelines and responsibilities by Spring 2027, plus the AI Airlock sandbox, which is open to applications.

If you build or buy AI-enabled medical devices in the UK, put those two dates in your compliance calendar, and decide whether your product suits AI Airlock before the 22 October webinar.

It adds no new facts.
