What is GitHub?

GitHub is a platform for building software. It builds on Git, a version control system that tracks changes to files, by hosting Git projects in the cloud and adding planning and collaboration tools for teams.

GitHub's documentation says it hosts Git projects, called repositories, in the cloud. Git is a version control system that lets you work on your own copy of a project, record a history of your changes, and merge your work with other people's changes.

GitHub adds planning and collaboration tools, and its documentation lists uses such as reviewing code, tracking projects, automating workflows like testing and deployment, and publishing software packages.
