Apollo's McDonald says AI cut mock portfolio builds to minutes

  • McDonald said building a mock portfolio of 200 to 400 single credit names used to take two to three days in a manual Excel model and now takes minutes. (04:53)
  • He said portfolio managers can reach 80 to 90% completion with the tool and then use their own judgment to refine the last 10%. (04:59)
  • He said a weekly warehouse trade reconciliation that took two to three people many hours a week is now repeatable in a minute, checked daily. (06:20)

Jack McDonald, who says he is a principal at Apollo and chief operating officer of Redding Ridge Capital, spoke on stage with Michael Manapat, a co-founder of Rowspace, at AI Engineer New York. The talk was published on the AI Engineer YouTube channel on 16 October 2026.

McDonald said building a mock portfolio of 200 to 400 single credit names used to take a portfolio manager two to three days in a manual Excel model, and that it now takes minutes. He said managers get it to 80 to 90% completion and then use their own judgment on the rest.

He also described a weekly trade reconciliation for Redding Ridge's warehouse purchases that took two to three people many hours a week. He said the report is now repeatable in about a minute and his team checks it each day.

Asked about finance as a whole, McDonald said he still thinks it is very early, and that there is probably a need for less junior support over time for certain functions. Rowspace, whose co-founder asked the questions, is the vendor of the system he described. The figures are McDonald's own account, given on stage.

What it means for you Our view

These figures are McDonald's own account, given on stage to a co-founder of Rowspace, which is the vendor of the system he described, so they are one team's experience and not an independent measurement. His own description of the work is useful: managers reach 80 to 90% completion and then apply judgment, and his team still checks the reconciliation each day, which suggests the saving sits in the first draft while review stays with people. He also said he still thinks finance is very early. If you run spreadsheet-heavy work such as portfolio construction or reconciliations, time one task as it is done today, ask any vendor to repeat it on your own data, and name who owns the daily check.

Huang tells Fridman he favours being selective on export controls

  • Huang said "the better strategy is to be quite extremely selective, extremely selective about access to, certain technologies", balanced with optimizing for a technology and economic flywheel. (48:13)
  • He said "a more sophisticated long-term strategy is to optimize for a flywheel" and that "The safest countries in the world are the richest countries". (46:55, 46:20)
  • On China, he said an American company on an American tech stack is "fairly deployable throughout the world" and "That's not true with China". (52:09)

Jensen Huang, Nvidia's founder and chief executive, was interviewed by Lex Fridman in Taiwan. The video, titled "Visiting Taiwan w/ Jensen Huang", was published on Fridman's YouTube channel on 13 October 2026.

Fridman asked Huang to talk through his export controls view and to make the case for and against. Huang said "the better strategy is to be quite extremely selective, extremely selective about access to, certain technologies" (48:13), balanced with optimizing for a technology and economic flywheel. He said "a more sophisticated long-term strategy is to optimize for a flywheel" (46:55), and "The safest countries in the world are the richest countries" (46:20).

On China, Huang said that an American company building on an American tech stack is fairly deployable throughout the world, and "That's not true with China" (52:09). He added that "on the one hand, we want to keep great technology to ourselves. On the other hand, we need that flywheel" (52:48), and that "The question about export controls is just this balance" (53:43).

What it means for you Our view

This is Huang's view, given when the host asked him to make the case for and against export controls. He calls the question "just this balance" (53:43) between keeping great technology at home and building a wider flywheel, and the conversation was filmed on the Computex visit, so it is not a new policy statement from Nvidia. If your AI plans depend on hardware or hosted models sold across borders, treat this as one executive's argument and ask your supplier which export rules apply to each market you serve.

How Lean checks an AI-written proof, and where that stops

  • Lean's manual describes its trusted kernel as a small implementation of a type checker, and says newly elaborated inductive types and definitions must be checked by it.
  • #print axioms lists what a declaration uses; sorryAx in the list means the theorem or a dependency uses sorry or is incomplete. Lean has four standard axioms.
  • The manual separates whether a theorem has a valid proof from what its statement means, and calls the basic check meaningful if the statement matches its intended meaning.

Lean is an open-source system that works both as a programming language and as a proof assistant. You use it to write precise, verifiable code and formal proofs.

Lean's manual describes its trusted kernel as a small, robust implementation of a type checker for the core type theory. New inductive types or definitions must be checked by the kernel to guard against potential bugs in elaboration.

The idea behind the check is called propositions as types. A statement is a type, and a proof of it is simply an object of that type. In interactive proving, every step has to be justified by appealing to prior definitions and theorems, all the way down to basic axioms and rules.

Lean's manual says proof terms are sufficient evidence of the truth of a theorem and are amenable to independent verification.

The check has limits, and the manual lists them. A proof can contain the sorry placeholder, which Lean says can prove anything and is not intended to occur in finished proofs. Running the command #print axioms on a theorem shows which axioms it depends on. A result that lists sorryAx is incomplete. Lean counts four standard axioms: propext, Classical.choice and Quot.sound, which the manual calls important parts of how mathematics is done in Lean, and sorryAx, which is not intended to occur in finished proofs.

The manual also separates two questions: whether a theorem has a valid proof, and what the theorem statement means. It says that if there are doubts the theorem means what it appears to mean, its statement and all referenced definitions must be investigated carefully.

For higher stakes it describes the lean4checker tool, which replays the stored declarations through the kernel, and a tool called Comparator, which builds the proof in a sandbox and checks that the proved statements match those in a trusted challenge file.

The manual says the check is meaningful if one believes the theorem statement matches its intended meaning and trusts the authors of the imported libraries to be honest.

What it means for you Our view

A passing Lean check answers whether a proof is valid, and leaves open whether the theorem proved is the one you wanted. The manual says to investigate the statement and the definitions it refers to when there is doubt, in particular custom notation and type classes. For higher stakes it describes lean4checker, which replays stored declarations through the kernel, and Comparator, which checks the proved statements against a trusted challenge file. When someone presents an AI-written result as verified in Lean, ask for the #print axioms output and read the theorem statement against the claim being made before you rely on it.
