Anthropic opens a waitlist for Claude Duet, a background agent

  • Anthropic describes Claude Duet as a research preview app where Claude works as a proactive agent, with a waitlist starting with US Pro and Max subscribers.
  • Duet runs on a virtual machine with its own browser, so the user's laptop or phone does not need to be on, and it checks connected accounts every few hours.
  • In the preview, Duet is included in Pro and Max plans and shares Claude's usage limits. It waits for approval before sending messages, making payments, signing documents or deleting anything.

Anthropic's launch page of 21 October 2026 describes Claude Duet as an app in research preview in which Claude works as a proactive agent. It sends a morning brief, checks connected accounts every few hours and messages the user only when something needs attention. Duet runs on a virtual machine with its own browser. Access is by waitlist, starting with US Pro and Max subscribers, on iOS, Android and claude.ai. Duet is included in Pro and Max plans and uses the same usage limits as the rest of Claude. Before Duet sends messages, makes payments, signs documents or deletes anything, it shows what it is about to do and waits for approval. Trading securities and moving money between accounts are not allowed, even with approval. Anthropic lists limits: Duet may misread a thread or misjudge what is urgent, and it cannot yet show the user its browser.

What it means for you Our view

Duet is a research preview behind a waitlist, so most readers cannot try it yet. Anthropic says it designed the app around Claude Opus 5.5 and that it works from a virtual machine, so it can act on connected accounts while your devices are off. That puts the approval step in focus: Anthropic says Duet shows what it is about to do before sending messages, making payments, signing documents or deleting anything, and it lists misreading a thread or misjudging what is urgent as known limits. Plan inclusion and usage limits are described for the research preview only. If you join the waitlist, try it first on low-stakes accounts, and ask Anthropic what the terms will be once the preview ends.

Nvidia names six supply-chain partners to expand chip manufacturing capacity

  • Nvidia plans to increase substrate capacity for its products by 2.5x over the next three years, according to its release.
  • Nvidia is giving King Yuan Electronics a $1.1 billion capacity reservation advance for new US testing facilities, with high-volume production targeted for April 2027.
  • Under an agreement IBIDEN announced earlier this year, Nvidia is providing a multibillion-dollar advance for IBIDEN's Ono plant, targeting 3x current capacity, ramping from the first quarter of 2028.

Nvidia said on 21 October 2026 that it is working with six supply-chain partners to expand manufacturing capacity in substrates, advanced packaging, testing and optical engines. The release says Nvidia plans to increase substrate capacity for its products by 2.5 times over the next three years. Nvidia is giving King Yuan Electronics a $1.1 billion capacity reservation advance to build new testing facilities and equipment in the US, with high-volume production targeted for April 2027. For IBIDEN's Ono plant in Japan, Nvidia is providing a multibillion-dollar capacity reservation advance, and the plant's capacity is targeted to reach three times current levels. Nvidia is backing Unimicron's substrate expansion in Taiwan through a capacity reservation agreement, with added capacity beginning in the second quarter of 2027. The release lists Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Amkor Technology and SPIL among the partners.

What it means for you Our view

These are Nvidia's plans and targets, not capacity that exists: the 2.5x increase, the April 2027 production date and the 3x target at IBIDEN's Ono plant all lie ahead, and the added Ono capacity is expected to ramp from the first quarter of 2028. The IBIDEN deal sits under an agreement announced earlier this year, so it is not a new arrangement. The release is Nvidia's own account, and it does not say how any of this changes what customers can buy or when. If you plan GPU purchases for 2027 or 2028, ask your supplier which delivery dates depend on this extra capacity, and treat dates that do as targets until the plants are producing.

Microsoft lets Azure customers keep root encryption keys outside Azure

  • Microsoft says external key management with Azure Managed HSM is generally available, so customers can hold the root encryption key in hardware they operate or via a trusted third party.
  • Data Guardian is rolling out for EU and EFTA customers and adds European-resident oversight by a trusted EU partner of qualifying Microsoft engineer remote access to in-scope production systems.
  • Confidential virtual machines on Azure Local are generally available. GitHub Enterprise Local and Foundry Local will become generally available at Microsoft Ignite.

Microsoft's post of 20 October 2026 sets out its sovereign cloud offer for European customers. External key management with Azure Managed HSM is generally available, so customers can keep the root encryption key in hardware they own or run through a trusted third party. Data Guardian is rolling out for EU and EFTA customers, adding European-resident oversight of certain Microsoft engineer remote access. SQL Server and confidential virtual machines on Azure Local are generally available. Several items, including GitHub Enterprise Local and Foundry Local, are described as arriving at Ignite.

What it means for you Our view

Microsoft describes these as sovereignty controls for European customers. Available now are external key management with Azure Managed HSM and confidential virtual machines on Azure Local. Data Guardian is still rolling out, and GitHub Enterprise Local and Foundry Local will become generally available at Microsoft Ignite, so neither can be planned on as available today. The post is Microsoft's own description, and it does not show how these controls compare with what a regulator or a customer contract may require. If you handle data under EU rules, ask Microsoft when Data Guardian reaches your tenant, and have your security team check who would hold the key under external key management.
