Gemini 4 Carbon opens to some cyber defenders first, with no developer date

  • Google says Gemini 4 Carbon, announced 28 October 2026, goes this week to a subset of cyber defenders, with more trusted partners phased in through its Fairwind Program.
  • Google gives no date for developers, businesses and consumers, saying only "as soon as possible" while it gathers feedback and iterates on guardrails.
  • The introductory price is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens; Google says $4 and $20 apply once the introductory period ends.

Google announced Gemini 4 Carbon on 28 October 2026 and calls it its strongest model, with state-of-the-art cybersecurity and long-horizon capabilities. Carbon is not generally available yet. Google says it is making Carbon available this week to a subset of cyber defenders, and will phase in more trusted partners through its Fairwind Program. It says developers, businesses and consumers will follow as soon as possible, and gives no date. Google also says it is actively engaged in the US government's voluntary process for pre-release model testing. The introductory price is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, with cached input tokens 95% cheaper; Google says $4 and $20 per million will apply once the introductory period ends. The benchmark results in the post are Google's own. Google says Carbon ranks first on version 5.0 of the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index with a score of 59, and reports 88.2% on SEC-bench Pro for finding vulnerabilities, 54.8% on ExploitGym for exploitation and 71.0% on Collinear's CWE-bench for patching, evaluated without guardrails. On safety, Google says Carbon reduced successful cheating on Terminal-Bench 4.0 to 0.0% and cut high-severity misalignment alerts in its own live coding by almost 80%. Carbon follows Gemini 4 Argon, which Google says launched two weeks earlier.

What it means for you Our view

Most readers cannot use Gemini 4 Carbon yet, so no product changes today. Google says wider access depends on feedback and guardrail work, and it gives no date. The listed price is introductory, so a budget built on $2 and $10 per million tokens should also be run at $4 and $20. The results in the post, including first place on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index at 59, are Google's own statements, and Google says its external benchmark results were evaluated without guardrails. If you work in security, ask Google whether your organisation can join the Fairwind Program; if you build on Gemini, cost your workload at both prices before committing.

Claude Enterprise admins can now see team spend and set shared group budgets

  • For a smart report an admin picks a team, a date range and the products; Claude analyses a sample of the team's transcripts and groups the work into workstreams.
  • A pooled group budget gives a group one shared monthly budget; a member stops at whichever limit runs out first. Billing admins get alerts at 50%, 75%, 95% and 100%.
  • Availability varies by configuration, including HIPAA configurations and customer-managed encryption keys. Anthropic says smart reports are not for evaluating individual performance.

Anthropic made smart reports, in-app surveys and pooled group budgets generally available for Claude Enterprise on 28 October 2026. Availability varies by configuration, including for organisations with a HIPAA configuration or customer-managed encryption keys. For a smart report an admin picks a team, a date range and the products to include. Claude analyses a sample of the team's transcripts, groups the work into workstreams, and shows the spend for each, the deliverables produced and the most common points of friction. Anthropic says the reports are not for evaluating individual performance or making employment decisions. A pooled group budget gives a group one shared monthly budget. Member limits still apply as a guardrail, every request counts against both, and a member stops at whichever runs out first. Admins with billing permission get email alerts at 50%, 75%, 95% and 100% of a budget. In-app surveys ask members short questions after a reply, and admins can export responses to a spreadsheet.

What it means for you Our view

If you administer Claude Enterprise, first check whether your configuration receives all three features, because Anthropic says availability varies for HIPAA and customer-managed key setups. Smart reports show spend by workstream, the deliverables produced and common friction such as a missing connector, which can inform where a limit should rise. Anthropic says they are not for evaluating individual performance or making employment decisions, so write that rule into your own policy before sharing them. Before you set a pooled budget, decide who receives the alerts and who reviews requests for more.

Anthropic expands free Claude credits for science to foundations and institutes

  • Anthropic says it is highlighting 20 foundations, institutions and research groups partnered in an expansion of AI for Science, its free Claude credits programme begun in May 2025.
  • Funders including the Sloan and Simons foundations, Schmidt Sciences and the US National Science Foundation will distribute credits; institutions such as the Crick Institute and EMBL will use them in-house.
  • Anthropic says it has launched a discounted Team plan for scientists, has supported hundreds of projects, and that many of these collaborations are still in their early stages.

Anthropic said on 28 October 2026 that it is expanding its AI for Science programme, which gives free Claude credits to researchers on high-impact scientific projects, to partner with foundations, research institutions and research groups. The programme started in May 2025. Anthropic says it has also launched a discounted Team plan for scientists and has supported hundreds of projects across biology, medicine, physics, chemistry, climate science and mathematics. Funders and societies that will distribute Claude credits to researchers include the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Simons Foundation, Schmidt Sciences and the US National Science Foundation. Institutions that will use credits inside their organisations include the Space Telescope Science Institute, the Wellcome Sanger Institute, the Francis Crick Institute, Imperial College London's Department of Life Sciences, EMBL and the Gladstone Institutes. Credits also go directly to projects including FlyWire at Princeton, gnomAD at the Broad Institute and the Tau Ceti mathematics library. The post does not state the size of the credits or a total.

What it means for you Our view

Researchers should first check whether their funder or institution is on Anthropic's list, since several partners will distribute credits themselves rather than Anthropic. Anthropic says many collaborations are still early, and the claims we checked give no credit size or total, so terms may differ by partner. Ask your funder or research office what a credit covers and for how long before you build a project on it.
