Anthropic renames Max 20x as Claude Ultra; unverified accounts get a temporary limit

  • Anthropic's help article says the Max 20x plan is now called the Ultra plan, and existing subscribers move over automatically with no price change.
  • The article says an account not yet verified gets a temporary limit, which Anthropic removes automatically once it verifies the account using factors such as account and payment history.
  • Verifying a phone number at checkout does not remove the limit; the article says that if Settings > Usage shows no Current session bar, the account is verified.

Verified accounts on Claude's Ultra plan have no five-hour usage limit, while accounts not yet verified get a temporary one, according to Anthropic's help article on the plan. Anthropic says it verifies Ultra accounts automatically, using factors such as account and payment history, so there is nothing to apply for. Verifying a phone number at checkout does not lift the limit. A user can check in Settings under Usage: if no Current session bar shows, the account is verified. Ultra costs $200 a month on the web and gives 10 times the Pro plan's usage every week. The article says the Max 20x plan is now called Ultra, and that existing Max 20x subscribers move over automatically at no change in price.

What it means for you Our view

For a team on Max 20x, the article describes a rename and an automatic move, so nothing needs to be done to switch. The open point is the limit on unverified accounts: the page gives no date for the change and no size for the temporary limit, so it does not show how far the limit would restrict heavy use. Anthropic decides verification on its own factors, and the article says there is nothing the user needs to do. Ultra costs $200 a month on the web, for web subscriptions only, and gives 10 times the Pro plan's usage every week. Open Settings, then Usage, and check whether the Current session bar shows before you plan work around the plan.

Google Cloud revenue rises 103% to $30.7 billion, Alphabet reports

  • Alphabet's release says Google Cloud revenue rose 103% to $30,709 million in the third quarter of 2026, against $15,157 million in the third quarter of 2025.
  • Google Cloud operating income was $11,121 million, against $3,594 million a year earlier; purchases of property and equipment were $51,355 million, against $23,953 million.
  • Pichai says Alphabet's first-party model APIs now process nearly 32 billion tokens per minute, more than four times what they processed a year ago.

Google Cloud's revenue more than doubled in the third quarter, reaching $30.7 billion against $15.2 billion a year earlier, Alphabet reported. The figures are in Alphabet's results release for the quarter, filed as Exhibit 99.1 and dated 28 October 2026, and in its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended 30 September 2026. The release says sales of TPU systems, Google's own AI chips sold as hardware, were a meaningful contributor to that growth. Google Cloud's operating income was $11.1 billion, against $3.6 billion a year earlier. Spending on property and equipment in the quarter was $51.4 billion, more than twice the $24.0 billion of the third quarter of 2025. Sundar Pichai says the company's first-party model APIs now process nearly 32 billion tokens per minute, more than four times a year ago, and that the Gemini app has reached one billion users. Pichai also says Gemini 4 Argon and Carbon are now leading at the frontier, which is his assessment and not a measured result. The 10-Q puts Alphabet's revenue backlog, the customer commitments not yet recognised as revenue, at $567.7 billion, of which $560.8 billion relates to Google Cloud.

What it means for you Our view

Alphabet's release credits both enterprise AI services and TPU hardware sales, so the growth is not only model usage: the 10-Q says Google Cloud product sales generally consist of TPU systems. Pichai's statement that Gemini 4 Argon and Carbon are leading at the frontier is his own assessment, and the release gives no measured comparison. The filings do not say how much of the revenue comes from each source. If you buy Google Cloud AI services, check which Gemini model and which hardware your contract names, and whether it fixes the price for the term.

What a revenue backlog counts, and what Alphabet's figure leaves out

A revenue backlog is signed contracts not yet booked as revenue. Alphabet's 10-Q shows what its $567.7 billion counts, what it excludes and how much it expects to book within 24 months.

What a revenue backlog counts, and what Alphabet's figure leaves out

  • Alphabet's 10-Q says it had $567.7 billion of revenue backlog at 30 September 2026, of which $560.8 billion related to Google Cloud.
  • The 10-Q says the backlog includes deferred revenue already recorded and amounts to be invoiced in later periods, and excludes cancelable contracts.
  • Alphabet expects to recognize just over 55% of the backlog within 24 months, and the backlog includes $16.8 billion from an agreement with Crux AI, a related party.

Alphabet's Form 10-Q for the quarter ended 30 September 2026 says it holds $567.7 billion of revenue backlog, and $560.8 billion of it belongs to Google Cloud, which sells TPU chip systems. Revenue backlog is the value of customer contracts that Alphabet has signed but has not yet recorded as revenue. In its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended 30 September 2026, Alphabet defines it as commitments in customer contracts that have not yet been recognised as revenue. The figure counts deferred revenue already on the balance sheet and also amounts that will be invoiced in later periods. It excludes cancelable contracts, so a customer that can walk away without penalty adds nothing to it. Alphabet says it expects to recognise just over 55% of the backlog as revenue over the next 24 months, with the rest after that, so a large part of the figure is not due soon. The 10-Q also says the backlog is largely driven by contract duration and by Alphabet's ability to deliver under the contract terms, and on when customers use the services. Two details show that the number is not a plain forecast. In the first quarter of 2026 Alphabet changed its reporting to include contracts with an original term of one year or less, and the backlog includes $16.8 billion from a multi-year commercial agreement with Crux AI, an unconsolidated joint venture that Alphabet treats as a related party. Nearly 99% of the total is Google Cloud: $560.8 billion of $567.7 billion, both at 30 September 2026. TPU systems matter here because the 10-Q says Google Cloud product sales generally consist of the sale of TPU systems, and that some arrangements may include options requiring Alphabet to repurchase the hardware at pre-set prices. What it means for you: when a cloud company quotes a backlog, check three things in its filing, whether cancelable contracts are excluded, how much is due within 24 months, and whether any of it comes from a related party. A backlog says what customers have committed to buy, and it does not say that the revenue has arrived or will arrive on schedule.

What it means for you Our view

A backlog records what customers have committed to buy, not revenue that has arrived. Before you read a cloud company's figure as a sign of demand for AI, check the filing for three things: whether cancelable contracts are excluded, how much is expected within 24 months, and whether any of it comes from a related party. For Google Cloud, the 10-Q says product sales generally consist of TPU systems and that arrangements may include options requiring Alphabet to repurchase the hardware; it does not say how many do. The next quarterly filing will show whether the 24-month share and the Crux AI amount have changed.
